Can I unlock a PDF that only has permissions restrictions (no open password)?

This tool targets user (open) passwords — the kind that prevent you from opening the file at all. Owner permission restrictions, which block printing or copying while still allowing opening, may not be fully removed.

Why does unlock fail even when I enter the correct password?

Some PDFs use non-standard or very old encryption formats that pdf-lib does not support. Make sure there are no trailing spaces in the password field and that Caps Lock is off. Try copying the password from your password manager to avoid typos.

Is it legal to unlock a PDF I own?

Yes, if you own the document and have the right to access it. Never use this tool to unlock documents you do not have permission to access — that would violate copyright and possibly computer access laws.

Does unlocking change the PDF content?

No. Only the encryption wrapper is removed. All text, images, formatting, annotations, and bookmarks remain exactly as they were in the original protected document.

What should I do if I do not know the password?

This tool cannot help without the correct password. Contact the author of the document to obtain the password. Password recovery or cracking is beyond the scope of this tool.

Is the unlocked file the same quality as the original?

Yes. Removing encryption only strips the security layer — no content is re-encoded, re-compressed, or altered in any way. The output file is visually and structurally identical to the original.
